What is a Biodigester?
A biodigester is a sealed, airtight concrete or modular tank that uses naturally occurring anaerobic bacteria to break down human and organic waste completely – without oxygen.
Unlike a traditional septic tank that simply stores waste until it is full and must be emptied by a tanker, a biodigester continuously digests the solid matter. The end products are:
- Clear, pathogen-reduced water that can be safely discharged into a soakaway or reused for non-potable purposes
- Small amounts of biogas (methane + CO₂)
- Minimal residual sludge that does not accumulate to fill the tank
How an ESIMA Biodigester Works – Step by Step
1. Collection
Black water (toilet waste) and, where designed, grey water enter the biodigester through an inlet pipe. A grease trap can be added upstream for kitchen lines.
2. Anaerobic Digestion
Inside the sealed chamber, specialised bacteria break down complex organic matter through hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis and methanogenesis – converting solids into water, gases and a nutrient-rich liquid.
3. Separation & Discharge
Clarified liquid exits through an outlet into a soakaway, French drain or secondary treatment. Solids are continuously digested so the tank never fills up.
4. Bio-Media Enhancement
We install high-quality bio-media (such as coconut fibre or specialised plastic media) to maximise bacterial surface area and accelerate the digestion process.
